Meta Quest 3: the VR Headset is coming out this fall

Meta announced news on Quest 3: release date, some settings, price and more!

The new virtual and mixed reality headset of Meta, Quest 3, will be launched in all countries (the ones where Meta Quest is supported) this fall. The price of this new headset will be around $500 with a 128GB of storage.
There is going to be a new Oculus Quest, it’s official! “Meta Quest 3 features higher resolution, stronger performance, breakthrough Meta Reality technology, and a slimmer, more comfortable headset”, according to Meta.

What is Meta Quest 3?

It is atechnologically advanced virtual reality (VR) headset developed by Meta (the previous name was Oculus Quest 3). It represents a significant advancement in the realm of immersive virtual experiences. This headset allows users to engage in virtual reality content without the need for external devices or cumbersome wires. It allows to use virtual reality for games, entertainment and even work.

According to Meta, this new Quest 3 is confirmed to come out this fall.

How much does Quest 3 cost?

Quest 3 will cost around $500 (the one of 128GB of storage). This new device will provide a better quality of image and a superior performance than the previous models of Oculus (Meta).

First look: Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3

First of all, a comparison between Oculus Quest 2 and Quest Pro is needed. The first headset launched was Quest 2. It was in October 13, 2020 when this headset come out. It comes with a self-contained design, high-resolution display (1832 x 1920 pixels per eye), a fast-switch LCD panel, intuitive controllers, and extensive content library. It cost almost $300 USD the model of 128GB (almost $350 USD the 256GB one). The Quest Pro was launched in October 2022.With 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, its resolution is the same as Quest 2 but with an improved contrast, additional sensors for tracking eye and face movement and rechargeable headset and controllers, among others. Now, it cost almost $1000 USD.Having said this, it’s time to know the features of the before named Oculus Quest 3 and compare them with the previous models of headsets by Meta.

New settings of Quest 3: a comparison with the previous models

Optics, pixel and resolution

Quest 3 will use pancake optics, something that Meta already did in the Quest Pro, which means a better clarity in image. They will have the highest resolution display that Meta has achieved (we don’t know yet, but the pixels will be clearer and sharper than Quest Pro). There are rumors that say that they will have a 30% more resolution than Quest 2: 4128 x 2208 pixels (2064 x 2208 per eye).In order to power those number of pixels, the headset will have a Snapdragon chipset that Meta developed in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies. This new chipset has twice the graphical performance than the previous generation (the one that Quest 2 had).Quest Pro has a color mixed-reality view, but Quest 3 will have it better. It relies on external cameras to allow users to view a live video feed of the real world, creating an augmented reality effect without the use of transparent lenses. It will have a natural depth perception.

System

The operating system is the same than the others: Quest system software, based on Android source code.

Processor

The processor powering the Quest 3 could be faster than Quest Pro. “The Quest 3 has twice the GPU performance of the Quest 2”, says Meta.

Automatic depth sensor

Quest Pro has a manual depth sensor that maps the room for a safe play area and Quest 3 will do it automatically. It allows an intelligent response to objects in the physical space, so everything will be more intuitive and natural.

Design and weight

Meta Quest 3 will be about 200 grams lighter than a Quest Pro. And it will be 40% slimmer than Quest 2 (excluding the facial interfaces), making it more comfortable. The headset will have no-cables: Quest 3 will use AA batteries.

Controllers

The controllers are redesigned (with a more streamlined and ergonomic form), and the controllers won’t have the outer tracking rings. The controllers will have TruTouch haptics, which will help the people to feel the action more real.

Library

Although all the new features, Quest 3 is going to be compatible with Quest 2 catalog. That means more than 500 VR games, apps and experiences like porn in virtual reality people can try.
